Post-Father's Day Thoughts. Aubrey Miller

Father's Day has been and Gone. I'm thinking of other men who made an impression on me.

I think of Aubrey Miller, a West Indian playwright and poet who came into my life when I was thirteen or so. Aubrey was the first person who treated me as if I had the potential to go beyond my immediate surroundings, the first person who introduced me to black political philosophy & literature, the first man to make me appreciate the power of the written word, the first person to make me believe I had not only the right but also the ability to express myself. Aubrey took me out of the limited borders of my children’s home and opened up the world to me. Looking back I owe him a debt I can never repay.
